I was reading the most recent issue of Clamor Magazine and came across a short review of a benefit CD for Radio CPR put out by indie powerhouse Dischord records.
This is the first I’ve heard of Radio CPR (stands for “Community Power Radio”), which surprised me, especially considering its been on the air for two years. The project sounds very cool and I look forward to tuning it in the next time I’m in the DC area. I’ll also be ordering the CD since, in addition to supporting a valuable community communications resource, it also features excerpts from Radio CPR broadcasts.
Here’s a little more about the station, from their website:
“After some initial starts and stops, Radio CPR has been broadcasting seven nights a week for over two years. Over forty volunteers a week give their time to the station, most of whom have been working with us for years. Our collective involves people representing a broad cross section of the neighborhoods we serve. Our volunteers, show hosts and deejays are young, old, Black, White, Latino, African, Asian, renters and homeowners. We include social workers, bar tenders, carpenters, the unemployed, artists, waitresses, teachers, students, lawyers and more. …
“We took over this tiny piece of the airwaves because we believe our communities need more outlets to voice and to listen to perspectives that donÂ’t get enough air time. We wanted to create a way to engage in the civic life of our neighborhoods through building community, working on common projects, listening to opinions other than oneÂ’s own, and understanding root causes of problems before latching onto ‘solutions’ that may do unjust harm to our neighbors. “
