Aw, come on, you didn’t think that debates in committee and on the House and Senate floor really amounted to anything, did you? Rep. Fred Upton, chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee sure as hell does, and was remarkably candid about that fact last week, as reported by the Cox News Service:
The Senate just needs to pass “anything to get us into conference,” where the real decisions will be made, House telecommunications subcommittee Chairman Fred Upton, R-Mich., said Tuesday at a telecom forum hosted by National Journal’s Technology Daily.
You see, in conference the Republican leadership doesn’t have to tangle with pesky Democrats or dissenters in their own party, and they don’t have to open their discussion up to the public, either.
That doesn’t mean the fight isn’t worth it. Rather, it just means more people need to be alerted to the fact that their elected representatives–especially a small cadre of a dozen–are ready to sell out the internet, regardless of what their constituents want or think.
