This takes some major balls — the Institute for Applied Piracy reports on Sydney Indymedia that they jammed commercial stations in that city for 10 minutes this morning with an anti-World Trade Organization report. A “mini-ministerial” of the World Trade Organization is meeting in that city this weekend. Recall that the anti-corporate-globablization movement really came together and Indymedia had its birth during protests against the WTO ministerial held in Seattle at the end of November, 1999.
“The media has not given any coverage to the real issues behind the WTO,” said the radio pirates. “It has only given sensationalist coverage of protesters being trampled by police horses, and no explanation of why people are protesting. The media is neglecting its obligation to inform Australians about the issues important to their lives.”
I’m very curious as to how these pirates pulled this off. It takes a lot of power to sufficiently overwhelm high-powered commercial FM stations. Though if you’re careful with your choices, you can be closer to listeners in a given area than a more distant transmitter, making it much easier to jam it with a comparatively weaker signal. Kind of like whispering in someone’s ear, the effect of proximity for radio reception is potent. I’m also dying to hear a recording of this.
